Here’s an example of why you use a professional to repair your leaky shower:
The builder was sent back to repair a leaking shower. The shower was done in the old-school mud-bed style of installation, and had a leaky shower pan. They attempted to merge a Kerdi waterproofing system into a mud-bed system by cutting off the flange of the Kerdi drain and mounting it between the 3-hole flange and drain. 5+ layers of Kerdi and board were involved in this ‘soup sandwich’ of a repair. It lasted less than a year before it failed.
Wrong 1 – You can’t integrate the two drain systems. They function in completely different manners. One system is designed to allow water movement into the drain pan, the other prevents it. Merging the two drains together created a Frankenstein contraption that couldn’t keep water out, or let it move through effectively.
Wrong 2 – Multiple layers of waterproofing might seem like a better idea, but waterproofing is…well, waterproof. The adhesives have to release their moisture (water) to dry, but the multiple layers prevent that moisture from escaping. The end result? Multiple layers sandwiched together may never cure out completely, creating the very situation they’re designed to prevent: Water escaping the enclosure.
What must have seemed like a good idea at the time turned into a nightmare of a repair for the customer.
